CMA Picnic- Raffle and Cornhole to support interns

This Thursday, July 17 at the CMA picnic there will be 50-50 raffle, an opportunity to support the CMA EF and our summer interns. The money raised at the picnic will help support those students working as interns at maritime companies. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Cash, venmo, check and credit cards will be accepted. Last year’s winner went home with over $1400! Take a chance for a great cause!

Cornhole fun anyone? To add a little carnival fun to the picnic, there will be a cornhole toss for prizes ($100, $75 and $50) sponsored by Todd McKenna, Old School Brokers. All proceeds will go to internship stipend fund. Five dollars will get you 3 tosses. For each toss that clears the hole you will receive a raffle ticket towards the cash prizes. Bonus raffle ticket if all 3 tosses hit their mark. It’s cornhole fun for a charity.

Jim Lawrence Scholarship

It has been just over a month since we lost our Board Member and founding CMA member Jim Lawrence. Jim was always supportive of CMA’s educational mission, and the establishment and funding of the CMA Education Foundation. He was one of the first to host CMA interns. Jim shared his time, talents and treasure with the Foundation and entire shipping community and he will be sorely missed.  To honor Jim, the CMA Education Foundation will be establishing a scholarship in Jim Lawrence’s name to be awarded to a student who embodies the qualities we will miss most about Jim. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation in honor of Jim, you can do so at https://cma-edu.org/donate/ , by mailing a check to CMA Education Foundation c/o Connecticut Maritime Association 100 First Stamford Place, Suite 600 Stamford, CT 06902 or by contacting Beth@cma-edu.org for wire transfer details.

Last month we published the list of our 2025 CMA EF Scholarship award winners. Below are a few of the recipients’ words of gratitude.

“Thank you so much for electing me to receive this generous scholarship. With my active pursuit in becoming a USCG licensed engineer this is extremely reassuring. I am currently shipping with McAllister towing abord one of their tugs and extremely fortunate to be a cadet observer in their fleet.”

 -Lucas Taormina, SUNY Maritime

“I am thankful for the scholarship and hope that I can attend more CMA events during the next school year.”

-Andrew McCarthy, SUNY Maritime

“Once again thank you for all of the support, it is appreciated by me and my family.”

-Sarah Shank, Maine Maritime

“I am currently out commercial sailing and just saw your email, thank you so much for your tremendous generosity and belief in me!”

-Curt White, Texas A&M Galveston

“Thank you so much to you and the scholarship committee for the CMA Education Foundation Scholarship.  I am truly honored and excited to be selected for this scholarship.  This award will enable me to continue my studies at Cal Maritime and will help offset the tuition costs.  I am very grateful to your organization for all they do to support students like myself.”

-Robert McDonough, California Maritime

“This is such wonderful news! Thank you, the scholarship will really help support my short-term relocation to Miami this summer (I’m currently in my second week with the maritime law firm, and getting used to the crazy weather!) and my last year of law school.

-Morgan Bissett Terrier, CUNY Law School

Thank you to all who support the CMA EF with donations as well as their time, talent and networks. You make it possible for us to support these students and the future generation of maritime professionals.

Sincerely,
