Christopher Columbus is credited with saying, “You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” For a high school, college or graduate student, a maritime education and career take courage to do something different from the typical educational career path. To help students who have the courage to explore a less traditional career or academic path and sea a future in the maritime industry, please help the Foundation continue our mission to promote and support maritime education. You can support these courageous students by hosting or funding an intern, donating to our scholarship fund or contributing your time by participating in our 2026 High School Career Day at Brien McMahon High School, serving on the Scholarship Selection Committee or mentoring a student.
Jim Lawrence was a founding father of the CMA, the CMA Shipping Conference and the CMA education and internship programs, a maritime entrepreneur, community builder, father, husband, grandfather, son, friend, colleague and inspiration to many. We miss him dearly. We have established the Jim Lawrence Memorial Scholarship Fund to honor and remember his legacy. We are very grateful to those who have sent contributions and notes. As we approach the end of 2025, please consider the CMA EF in your planned end of year giving. We will publicly acknowledge and thank our donors in the December newsletter. On behalf of the Board and myself, we sincerely appreciate your support. Donations can be made at www.cma-edu.org, when renewing your CMA membership or accepted via check or wire transfer.
